LO1: Investigation of the radio industry





Commercial National- Kerrang FM

Kerrang was first published in 1981, it is currently broadcasted to London on DAB and across the United Kingdom on Freeview. Bauer media owns Kerrang similarly to Hallam FM which is also owned by Bauer media however it plays different types of programs and genres of music as Kerrang focus on Rock music. Kerrang radio is broadcasted on platforms for example 105.2FM locally, DAB locally, DAB nationally. The typical Kerrang listener has a gender ratio of female 39% and male 61% with an ABC1 profile of 50%, with a target demographic age of 15-35. Kerrang radio broadcasts music specifically rock music in comparison to Hallam FM which also broadcasts music however it is a local radio station to South Yorkshire and tyoically plays pop and throwback hits.   An example of what plays on Kerrang Radio is music playlists such as Propaganda and the Hijack: Machinehead. There’s also chances to win a tech bundle and £250 sponsored by the new Maze Runner Death Cure, these articles on the photo  below rel ate to the target audience as the tech bundle and music of 'Hijack Machinehead' are a typical stereotype of what an auidence of rock lovers would listen to and use.


Commerical Local- Hallam FM

Hallam FM was first laucnhed in October 1974. It is the number one local commercial radio station for South Yorkshire and the North Midlands. Hallam FM is also owned by Bauer media, simalirily to Kerrnag FM. It plays ' all the biggest hits, all day long' which is there radio station jingle. The typical Hallam FM listener has a gender ratio of 54% female and 46% male with an ABC1 profile at 37%. The target demographic age is 25-45 year olds in comparison to Kerrang which has a target age at 15-35 as it plays a different genre of music, which is more specific for families of all ages=, however the typical Kerrang FM listener is speicifced in Rock which isnt as diverse as Hallam FM music. Big John at breakfast is one of the main radio shows broadcasted on Hallam Fm playing different genres of music including recent hits and throwbacks. Competitions include the 1K minute on Hallam FM which allows a wider audience to listen to Hallam to try and win the prize money. There is also comedici trendig news which entertain their audience, who not only are interetsed in the radio shows but the presenters.






Local- Sheffield Live

Sheffield Live is a local radio station which launched in the 2000s, it is owned by Commedia Sheffield, The service started broadcasting on the frequency 93.2 FM on 29 October 2007. The radio station focuses on local news and music for example Tramlines 10th anniversary which is local to the community, featuring interviews with one of the organisers to inform and entertain the audience. The music featured is Ska to Soul to Rock to Reggee featuring a wide range of music. This station is different compared to Hallam FM for example the music played is different to suit a more niche audience for the community of Sheffield. Over 50% of Sheffield Live listeners are aged 25-44 with 51.75 of listeners enjoying live music and gigs and a high majority at 77% who go to pubs and clubs. Programmes aired on Sheffield Live suit a smaller audience for example one airing every Friday 1pm-3pm 'write radio' which showcases new and local writing from the people of South Yorkshire. 















Non- Profit- Hive Radio

Hive radio is a non profit radio station based at Manchester Metropiltan Univesity. It plays music ranging from Hip Hop to RnB to Indie via show tunes and chat shows. Hive radio focuses on letting the students of Manchester Met to join in with the radio station to expand their horizen givig them chances of becoming a presnter for the show, producer, writers, photographer, graphic designer and having alot more oppurtinities for thwem to work with felow memebers of Met. As their target audience is based on a young adult audience of students at univeristy the genres of music and features are diferent with upbeat presenters to suit the targe audience, compared to Sheffield Live for example as the station is more slowed down with more talking about local news etc than music being played.

Online- Kool 97 FM

Kool 97 FM is a Jamican radio station,  the station's playlist simmers with Caribbean charm, with old favourites such as Peter Tosh, Bob Marley and Lee Scratch Perry through to new artists like Chronixx and Protoje this is relevant to the community of Jamica which promises that half the music they play is reggae. This radio station is different compared to station for exmaple Kerrnag FM as although they have similarities including playing a main feature of music which is Rock on Kerrang the listenetship is drajstically smaller for Kool 97 FM as it is local and as it in internet based it isnt as well known as other radio stations. One of the biggest feaqtures of Kool 97 FM is also very different to any other station having a whole section of flight arrival times and departures as a regular feature. 




PSB- BBC Radio 2



BBC radio 2 is mainly aimed at adults over 35 which is more targeted at that age group, pmostly laying music from the 80s and 90s to suit the targte audiences interests. BBC Radio 2 is one of the most popular radio stations with over 15 million weekley listeners. The station was first launched on 30th September 1967 and is currently broadcast in the UK on FM between 88.1 and 90.2. One of the main radio programmes broadcast on Radio 2 is the Chris Evans breakfast show broadcasting from 6:30am til 9:30am with features on his program including the good morning chris club, Smashers-Two classic songs from a selected decade are played every day after the news at 8:30 am. On Monday these are from the 1960s. Tuesday is 1970s, Wednesday is 1980s and Thursday is 1990s and 2000s. The output BBC radio 2 put out is funded by the licnese fee which makes it sa public radio station.
